Two years ago, in February 2024, the federal government hosted the National Summit on Combating Auto Theft in response to a sharp rise in vehicle theft across Canada — and especially Alberta. Since then, governments, law enforcement, insurers, and industry partners have been co-ordinating to help combat this very expensive issue.
The good news is that, country-wide, over the last two years auto theft claims have declined by roughly 27%, reports the Insurance Bureau of Canada.
It’s encouraging news, but we at Lane’s Insurance insurance know that auto theft remains a very real risk for vehicle owners — and one that still has a direct impact on insurance costs, claims frequency and overall financial risk for drivers.
While progress is being made, theft rates are still significantly higher than they were a decade ago. That means prevention, proper coverage and risk awareness are more important than ever.
Why auto theft is still an issue
Auto theft is more than just a statistic. It affects real people. When a vehicle is stolen, it can disrupt your ability to get to work, manage family responsibilities, and maintain your daily routine. Many of us form emotional attachments with our vehicles, and even if they are recovered after they are stolen, they are often trashed, damaged, or written off.
From an insurance standpoint, higher theft losses across the country also contribute to upward pressure on auto insurance premiums, which are quite expensive for many as it is. This is why us insurance brokers are continuing to push for long-term solutions.
As a result of the Summit, the federal government’s ensuing National Action Plan on Combating Auto Theft has focused on several key areas that directly affect vehicle owners.
Making vehicles harder to steal
One of the biggest drivers behind the rise in auto theft over the past decade has been how quickly theft methods have evolved — especially electronic theft.
Proposed updates to Canada’s vehicle safety standards will work to modernize anti-theft requirements and better combat the newer tools used by organized crime groups. These updates are designed to ensure vehicles sold in Canada are better equipped to conbat modern electronic theft techniques.
This is a positive step forward, but also reveals just how important it is to understand your own vehicle’s theft risk and consider additional protection measures. It’s never a bad idea to contact your dealership or a trusted mechanic to see if your vehicle is particularly vulnerable to theft and what you can do about it.
Preventing stolen vehicles from leaving Canada
Many stolen vehicles are quickly whisked away, loaded into containers, moved through ports, and shipped overseas. There are now increased border enforcement and new export inspection powers to help authorities intercept stolen vehicles before they are taken out of the country.
There are also discussions around stricter export documentation timelines, which would give authorities more time to properly verify vehicles before they are shipped internationally.
Improving data-sharing between agencies
Better data sharing between police agencies, provincial registries and international partners helps identify stolen vehicles faster and improves recovery rates.
Faster identification makes a major difference in whether a vehicle is recovered, and how quickly.
What this means for Alberta drivers
Even with progress made, vehicle theft remains a major concern across many parts of Canada, including Alberta. Certain vehicle types, keyless entry systems and parking habits can all influence theft risk.
