With the cost of living continuing to rise in Calgary, and auto insurance costs being one expense that keeps rising, Albertans are looking for practical ways to reduce their monthly bills. While the Alberta government works to overhaul the province’s insurance system, and major changes in line for 2027 that will hopefully help, there is confidence that auto insurance costs will improve, however nearly every household budget is feeling the pressure of other escalated expenses, such as groceries, fuel and utilities.
At Lane’s Insurance, we understand the challenges many families and businesses are facing. As members of the Insurance Brokers Association of Alberta, we advocate for our clients and work hard to help them find the right auto insurance coverage at the most competitive rates. Fortunately, there are several ways to reduce your Calgary auto insurance costs without sacrificing the protection you need.
Here are ten strategies that may help lower your premiums.
1. Work with an insurance broker
One of the easiest ways to find Calgary auto insurance savings is by working with an experienced insurance broker. At Lane’s Insurance, our brokers have access to a wide range of respected insurance providers, allowing us to compare coverage options and rates on your behalf to find you the best policy for your needs. Rather than spending hours shopping around yourself, we do the legwork for you.
Our team is made up of qualified insurance professionals who understand the nuances of different policies and can identify opportunities for auto insurance savings while ensuring you maintain appropriate coverage. With expert advice, personalized service, and access to multiple insurers, working with a broker is simply better than working with an insurance company alone.
2. Increase your deductible
Your deductible is the amount you agree to pay out of pocket when filing a claim. While many drivers choose a $500 deductible, increasing that amount can often reduce your monthly premium.
Before making the change, make sure the higher deductible is an amount you can comfortably afford if an accident occurs. A lower premium can provide long-term savings, but only if the deductible remains a manageable cost for you.
3. Review optional coverages
Depending on the age and value of your vehicle, it may be worth reviewing optional coverages such as collision insurance and glass coverage.
Collision insurance helps pay for repairs to your vehicle following an accident you are at fault for. Only vehicles that are completely paid off are eligible to solely carry comprehensive coverage, however. Leased and financed vehicles must carry both. Also remember that in Alberta, hit-and-runs are not covered without collision insurance, so if you are often parked on a busy street you may not want to choose that option.
One way to check if removing collision coverage from your Calgary auto insurance is a good idea is to estimate your car’s actual cash value using resources like the Kelley Blue Book or the Canadian Black Book. A common rubric used is if the annual cost your collision coverage is more than 10% of your car’s value, dropping it might make financial sense.
Similarly, some drivers choose to remove windshield and glass coverage through the 13-D endorsement. Doing so can help reduce premiums, but it also means you will be responsible for repairs or replacement costs should windshield damage occur.
4. Update your driving habits
If your driving habits have changed and you are on the road less, your insurance policy should reflect your new reality.
Many Albertans now work remotely, commute less frequently, or drive fewer kilometres than they did in previous years. Since annual mileage is one of the factors insurers consider when calculating premiums, reduced driving could result in lower rates. If it has been a while since you have reviewed your policy, it may be worthwhile to update your broker with your current driving information.
5. Park in a secure location
Many don’t realize that where your vehicle is parked overnight influences your Calgary auto insurance costs.
Vehicles parked in garages, secured parking lots, or other protected locations generally face lower risks of theft, vandalism, and accidental damage than those parked on the street. Showing that your vehicle is regularly stored in a safer location may help reduce your premium.
6. Install anti-theft devices
Most modern vehicles come equipped with factory-installed theft-deterrent systems, but additional security measures may still qualify for discounts, especially considering just how savvy today’s auto thieves are.
Devices such as vehicle recovery systems and immobilizerscan reduce the likelihood of theft and may help lower your insurance costs. Ask your broker whether your vehicle’s security features qualify for any available discounts.
7. Consider telematics programs
Usage-based insurance programs, commonly known as telematics, reward safe driving habits.
Programs such as Intact’s My Driving Discount monitor factors such as braking, acceleration, speed, and overall driving behaviour. Drivers who demonstrate safe habits may qualify for significant savings, with some programs offering discounts of up to 25%.
Aviva provides the Aviva Journey app, which measures driving speed, smoothness, control, and attentiveness behind the wheel. Drivers receive an instant 10% discount on their premiums and are eligible for up to a 20% discount on the next renewal.
Telematics can be an excellent option for confident, low-risk drivers looking to reduce their premiums.
8. Ask about available discounts
Many insurers offer discounts that their clients are not aware of. Depending on your insurance company, savings could be available for professionals in certain occupations, graduates of recognized institutions, long-term customers, retirees, or members of professional associations.
9. Bundle your insurance policies
Bundling multiple policies with the same insurer is one of the most common ways to save.
Combining your home and auto insurance — or other personal insurance policies — can often qualify you for substantial multi-policy discounts. Beyond the savings, bundling also helps simplify your life by consolidating your coverage, renewals, and payments under a single provider.
10. Be a defensive driver
Of course, one of the most effective ways to lower your Calgary auto insurance payments is to maintain a clean driving record. Safe defensive (or proactive) driving continues to be one of the best ways to stay accident-free and keep your insurance costs under control. Remember that the Alberta government recently implemented a rate cap on premium hikes for drivers with good, infraction-free driving records.
