Alberta is one of Canada’s most beautiful provinces, and many residents love to get outdoors with their recreational vehicles. ATVs and off-road motorcycles do require special insurance considerations, though, so ensure to protect your property properly before heading out on to one of this province’s many beautiful trails.
Alberta Auto Insurance: Covering Your All-Terrain Vehicle
ATVing is a popular pastime in Alberta, and a number of insurance solutions are available for all-terrain vehicle owners. Just as with a car, you are required to register and insure your ATV in order to legally operate it on public land.
First, insurers define an all-terrain vehicle as a vehicle with at least four wheels that is self-propelled and specifically designed to be operated off-road, or on snow or ice. Note that snowmobiles are not considered the same thing as ATVs for insurance purposes.
You must carry accident coverage as well as third-party liability on your ATV. As with regular auto insurance, you can upgrade your protection to include your vehicle’s value as well as accidental damage. You can also get complete “all perils” ATV coverage, which insures you against virtually every type of incident that could occur.
If you want added protection but want to keep costs in check, many insurers also offer you the option of insuring your ATV against specific named perils. Examples include fire, theft and damage caused by weather-related events.
Alberta Auto Insurance: Special Considerations for Off-Road Motorcycles
Off-road motorcycles or dirt bikes must be registered and insured to be operated in accordance with provincial law. There are three basic types of off-road motorcycle coverage available to Albertans:
- All perils. This option provides complete protection for accidents, damage, theft, fire and any other type of peril.
- Comprehensive coverage. With a comprehensive coverage plan, you will be protected from all perils except collision damage, fire, theft and vandalism. This is an affordable, flexible option if you want to expand on basic protection but want to keep your costs as low as possible.
- Basic perils. This is the minimum type of coverage you need to operate an off-road motorcycle in Alberta. As with ATVs, this type of protection covers accidents and third-party liability.
